Mission
To provide a fertile learning environment, rich with the nutrients that help us cultivate the intellectual growth, creativity, scholarship and social conscience of each student, within a community of values rooted in the Quaker tradition that advocates mutual respect and nurtures the spirit as well as the mind.
Philosophy
Friends School holds strongly to the Quaker belief that there is that of God in each person. Students are encouraged to consider and honor others through the development of healthy, respectful social relationships, the practice of peaceful conflict resolution, and the challenges of intellectually stimulating programs that provoke curiosity and foster a lifelong love of learning. Teachers present up-to-date issues through integrated, cross-curricular lessons that meet the needs of a variety of learners. Through these curricula, students develop the problem solving and critical thinking skills that enable them to contribute to and share the satisfaction of the group’s academic progress. Quaker values are at the foundation of our programs; all members of the Friends School family learn about honoring diversity, valuing individual and group achievement, and contributing their strengths to the needs of the community and the world.
Operating Principles
Respect
We emphasize respect for the individual and for individual differences within our school community and among the diverse people of the world.
Collaboration
We teach and practice mutual trust, cooperation, consensus building, mediation, open communication, and the nonviolent resolution of differences. We avoid programs and activities that tend to glorify war or violence.
Social Responsibility
We encourage age-appropriate service and activities that promote the search for peace, justice and the building of a better world.
Spirituality
We believe our weekly Friends Meeting for Worship is a vital part of our spiritual and educational experience, supporting our individual and communal search for the truth and the light within us all. That spirit, centered in Meeting for Worship, pervades the school.
Learning
We provide a challenging academic education designed to prepare our students for lifelong learning. We respect individual instructional needs and support our students in reaching their maximum potential.
Achievement
We strive for high personal and group performance in classes and in sports.
Creativity
We emphasize creativity throughout our classrooms and especially in the arts, which enable us to express physically what we have abstractly.
Community
We promote a series of activities and programs that create opportunities for students to shine and for different age students to work together on projects of mutual interest.
Teaching
We value the professionalism and leadership of our teachers in shaping the context of our program and the learning experience of our students.
Inclusion
We design our admission and hiring processes to create a good match of student and faculty and to build a diverse school community.
Giving
We depend upon and appreciate the voluntary gifts of financial support, time, and talent from a broad constituency, both inside and outside the school community.
