Fifth Grade
Fifth grade is a year of transition between the Lower and
Middle Schools. In an effort to prepare students for the coming
years, we emphasize developing the essential skills of organization,
good work habits, and increased independence. Fifth grade
is team taught. Students are assigned a homeroom, and they
change classes, primarily between the teachers of the core
academic subjects of English, math, social studies, and science.
English is a combination of literature, grammar, vocabulary,
and writing. The focus of literature, through whole group
study, as well as independent reading, is on the comprehension
and analysis of literary elements. Students have the opportunity
to explore a variety of genres. As students gain more exposure
to grammar and usage, they practice expanded sentence writing
and writing paragraphs with specific purposes. Most writing
in fifth grade is connected to literature, social studies,
and science topics. An extensive vocabulary program is another
avenue for increasing the sophistication of writing.
Social studies in fifth grade focuses on a segment of American
history. It begins with European exploration and settlement
and continues through colonization, the Revolutionary War,
and the United States Constitution. The students are involved
in several group and hands-on activities throughout the course
of the year.
