First Grade
First graders are thirsty for knowledge of the world around
them. As reading and writing skills advance they begin to see the power that these skills have in their lives. Reading becomes a tool to learn new information. Writing becomes a means of expressing what they have learned. Students benefit from the cross curricular integration of reading and writing opportunities in their study of Social Studies and Science.
First graders practice lab safety and routines. Lab sessions begin with a
review of safe lab procedures: wear googles, handle substances with care, never do unapproved experiments, wash hands at end of clean up.
In these photos, first graders are mixing a corn starch with water. Is the
result a solid or a liquid?
