In the Fall, we will be officially transitioning our math curriculum to Math in Focus (Singapore Math) for grade K – 6 (please note that Pre-Algebra, Algebra and Geometry taught to our oldest students will stay the same). This year, we piloted the Math in Focus curriculum in two grades: 4th grade and 6th grade. What we’ve noticed is that this program provides a high level of challenge for our students, while focusing on building mastery of the skills needed to be successful in elementary and middle school math. The curriculum materials and support tools give teachers a wide range of instructional strategies to provide differentiation to students, which is great for our community of learners. It is the type of math curriculum that challenges even our strongest math students to stretch themselves and grow.
We expect that students will need time and support to fully transition to Math in Focus. The information in the text is presented differently, students are challenged to think differently and that isn’t always easy! The expectations for mastery and student learning are ambitious but achievable. Student success with this program will require partnership and support from both teachers and parents at home. We look forward to sharing more information with parents on how to best support students through the transition as the Fall comes closer.
We have spent months researching and reflecting on what is right for our students and their learning and we are excited about this change. We think this will further enhance our math program in getting students ready for the rigor of high school math!
