Fifth Grade
Fifth grade math students are becoming more
comfortable with fractions, decimals and percents. We will
be using them more as we learn to collect and organize data.
Science students have been studying ecology and will soon
be analyzing the many ways that humans interact with and subsequently
change an ecosystem’s balance. We will research the
use of natural resources and will gather information for a
pro and con debate on the use of those resources.
The fourth and fifth graders will be learning about the different
instruments of the orchestra. They will learn about sections
that these instruments are a part of, such as; the string
section, woodwind, brass, and percussion. Students will listen
to the musical fairytale composed by the Russian composer
Sergei Prokofiev, "Peter and the Wolf". By listening
to this story, the students will become better familiar with
the different sounds of the different instruments which represent
all the characters in the story. "The Story of the Orchestra"
is another collection, by Robert Levine, that includes compositions
from the greatest composers, which will help the students
to learn about the instruments, composers, and the world of
classical music. We will also form a mini orchestra to give
the students an opportunity to experience hands-on how to
be a musician, and play different pieces.
