Second Grade –T.
Kayla and T. Kathy Over the past few weeks,
second grade has taken their understanding of Dr. Martin Luther
King’s teachings to a new level. For our community service
project second grade was compelled to make blankets to comfort
to sick babies at local hospitals. Each child’s family
donated fleece fabric and our students then worked together
diligently cutting and tying the soothing blankets. We worked
very hard and successfully completed twenty-five blankets.
We will be donating the blankets to the maternity ward at
Kennedy Memorial Hospital in Washington Township. The children
wanted to find a way they could help others, and together
second grade students were able to reach out to their community.
Second grade is now excited to start our journey into the
world of Ancient Egypt. We are beginning our expedition by
learning what the word ‘ancient’ means, and researching
the geography of Africa and Egypt. In time students will be
exploring other parts of Egyptian life such as education,
everyday life, pharaohs, the Nile River, pyramids, and other
interesting areas. To help each child fully understand the
history, second grade is taking a trip to the University of
Pennsylvania’s Ancient Egypt museum in early April.
We are excited to search through the museum and discover the
secrets of Ancient Egyptians.
Violin – T. Amanda
We are working on the song "Hot Cross Buns" as an
exercise to use left hand fingers on the violin. We can play
this song on all four strings. For the spring concert, we
will be preparing a song on the "D" string including
the notes "D", "E", "F#", and
"G".
Science – T. Rhonda
Second graders began learning about, observing, and recording
weather early in the school year. Even though they have long
since moved on to other topics of study they continue to monitor
the local weather.
Each week there are two second grade weather reporters. After
taking care of their usual morning classroom duties, they
report to the science lab. Using the computer, they access
the daily weather forecast for Mullica Hill. Using this information,
they fill out a weather report; noting such facts as the daily
expected high and low temperatures, air pressure, humidity,
and sunrise/sunset times.
Now it is time for their favorite part! Nine copies of the
weather report are made. One copy is displayed by the main
doors of the Hanshi Building. The other eight copies are distributed
to the classrooms of grades 1 through 5 by the weather reporters.
The weather reporters are rotated weekly so that each child
will have several turns monitoring our local weather.
Art – T. Diane
The focus of art projects for the second trimester has been
on the element of color and value. Second grade added white
and black to a color to make a tint or shade. Students painted
snow scenes with value to create a dimensional look to their
pictures. The third trimester will focus on the art element
of form. Students will create three-dimensional artwork in
several media including, paper mache, clay, and mixed media.
