Third Grade
T. Megan and T. Lauren

February was Black History Month. The third grade had the unique opportunity to learn about our history through the production of a puppet show. The production was a culmination of all our studies of the Underground Railroad. We had the pleasure of working with Dr. and Mrs. George Neff, professional puppeteers from Rowan University. They facilitated the process of creating an entire show from beginning to end by helping us create a story, script, build puppets, rehearse lines and perform our show! It is amazing how much the students learned without even realizing it. They were so engaged within the show and puppets that they forgot they were actually learning about the very real, and very important piece of history known as the Underground Railroad. What a way to celebrate Black History Month. This is a memory of 3rd grade we’ll surely not forget!

Take a look at the literature we read and studied during this month:
Sister Anne’s Hands by Marybeth Lorpiecki
Amazing Grace by Harry Hoffman
Blast to the Past: King’s Courage by Stacia Deutsch and Rhody Cohen
Aunt Harriet’s Underground Railroad in the Sky by Faith Ringgold
Follow the Drinking Gourd by Janette Winer
Under the Quilt of Night by Deborah Hopkinson
The Gold Cadillac by Mildred D. Taylor
A Picture Book of Harriet Tubman by David A. Adler

Violin – T. Amanda
We are working on some basic musical concepts that will prepare the classes for recorder class and beyond. Our main focus is note-reading on the treble staff. We are reviewing the notes "D", "E", "F#", and "G", and we are learning the notes "A", "B", "C#", and "D".

Art – T. Diane
The focus of art projects for the second trimester has been on the element of color and value. Third grade used warm and cool colors to draw still lives. The subject matter was their favorite stuff animal and the media used was oil pastel. The third trimester will focus on the art element of form. Students will create three-dimensional artwork in several media including, paper mache, clay, and mixed media.
