Christian Wilson, Class of 1997
After completing 7th and 8th grades at Friends School, I
left Mullica Hill to attend high school at St. Andrew’s
School, a boarding school in Middletown, DE. While my four
years at St. Andrews were challenging, I excelled by leveraging
the academic and intellectual skills I first acquired at Friends.
I graduated cum laude from St. Andrew’s and in the fall
headed to a small liberal arts college in western Massachusetts,
Amherst College.
Amherst’s liberal arts education allowed me to acquire
a broad base of knowledge across disciplines while exploring
many of my academic as well as extracurricular interests.
In May 2005 I graduated from Amherst with a double major in
math and computer science and in June began as an investment
banking analyst for Banc of America Securities. After two
years in finance, I decided to pursue a career in medicine
and this past September started at Columbia University Medical
School.
As I look back over my path to medicine, I recognize that
without the educational foundation I received at Friends many
of my accomplishments may not have been realized. It was at
Friends that I first learned how to ask critical questions
and search for the information to formulate independent thoughts
and opinions. Friends fostered in me an intellectual curiosity
that has, and will continue, to serve as a main driver for
success. By allowing me to explore my intellectual curiosity
and challenging me to develop the skills needed for that exploration,
Friends instilled in me the confidence and ability to excel
academically as well as professionally.
