Class of 2005 Includes Two Exceptional Musicians

By Ted Matyas ‘01

Amongst the Class of 2005, there are many accomplished individuals. In this graduating class, students have excelled academically, athletically, and musically. I conducted an interview with two members of the class of 2005, Chloe and Weston . I asked them about their time at Friends School, their musical abilities, and their plans for high school.

Chloe, who has attended Friends School since 2 nd grade, looks fondly upon her time here. She feels that Friends School has academically prepared her for high school and that Quakers have positively influenced her beliefs.

For the last seven years, Chloe has taken violin lessons at Friends. Her interest in the violin was first sparked while attending a concert. She liked the look and the sound of violin. Ever since, she has worked to become an accomplished violinist. Her dedication to the violin has meant daily practice and regular lessons at Friends School with Teacher Beth.

For high school, Chloe applied to and was accepted at Wilmington Friends School, Peddie School, Northfield-Mount Herman School, Ursuline Academy, and George School. Chloe had known since 6 th grade where she wanted to go to high school. To her, George School was the right fit. She simply got a “good vibe” during her visit to George School and was excited about continuing her Quaker education through the high school level. Chloe was awarded the Anderson Scholarship, which is given to students new to George School for their academic achievements, personality, and involvement in the community. Chloe is the second Friends School graduate to receive this prestigious award. Eugene McDermott ’00 was the first.

Weston came to Friends School during 5 th grade from Washington Township Public Schools. He has enjoyed his four years at Friends School and his only regret is that he didn’t join the Friends School community earlier.

Like Chloe, Weston’s instrument of choice is from the string family. From a young age, Weston was impressed by stringed instruments. For the last seven years, he has taken cello lessons at Rowan University and Friends School Fine and Performing Arts. Weston’s combinations of “natural talent” and practice have made him an exceptional cello player. Weston laments not being able to practice everyday; his 8 th grade year has been busy with academics and his high school search.

Weston’s search for a high school has led him to Germantown Friends School. He will become the first graduate of Friends to attend Germantown Friends School. Weston chose Germantown because he was impressed with their academics and music program. According to Weston, Germantown Friends has the best music program in Pennsylvania.

Although Weston is excited about high school, he recognizes that he will miss his friends, teachers, and the caring environment here at Friends.
