Teacher Nicole Donnelly
Field Hockey (Head Coach)
Girls’ Basketball (Head Coach)
Playing team sports has been a major part of my life since and has helped me to develop skills that have helped me in all areas of my life. My athletic pursuits started 13 years ago here at Friends when, as a 5 th grader, I began playing field hockey. I also played basketball and softball until I graduated from 8 th grade and attended Wilmington Friends School where I played field hockey, basketball, and lacrosse until I injured my knee in my senior year. This difficult experience provided me the opportunity to return to Friends as an assistant basketball coach. I think a good team member both coaches and is coached by her fellow teammates, but this was my first experience with more “formal” coaching – and I loved it! I really wanted to give back to the players some of what I gained from the inspiring coaches I had when I was a student at Friends.

I had an equally amazing coach at Earlham College, where I played field hockey and lacrosse for four years (Earlham is a Quaker college in Richmond, Indiana.) My coach was a lot like my teachers and coaches at Friends – compassionate, intelligent, grounded, hard-working, and a true model of how to live with integrity. I feel very fortunate to have been able to work closely with her as a captain to both teams for my sophomore through senior years. Teacher Nicole teaches Middle School Spanish here and is a Friends School alumna.

Teacher Jason Hummel
Soccer (Head Coach)

Softball (Assistant Coach)

I started volunteering at Friends School as a soccer coach in 1998 after I graduated from college. I assisted with coaching for two years before becoming a teacher here at Friends. I enjoy coaching soccer as it is a sport which requires teamwork, athleticism, and brains. The game is filled with constant action and exciting moments. During practice I like to incorporate as many fun activities that promote the developing needs of my players. Every year I get a small number of students with little soccer experience. I enjoy watching them develop throughout the season. Through my coaching I try to instill fair and aggressive play, teamwork, and self-confidence. I look forward to stepping out onto the field with my players. Teacher Jason teaches 5th grade here and is a Friends School alumnus.

Teacher Peter Manzelmann
Boys’ Basketball (Head Coach)

Basketball has been an important activity throughout most of my life. From playing as a youth in a local recreation league to competing on the collegiate level ( Earlham College—NAIA), basketball has taught me many important like lessons. My philosophy as a coach stresses the fundamentals of defense, passing, shooting, dribbling, and moving without the ball. The primary goal is to teach these skills and techniques within the framework of the team concept. Basketball is a journey that the whole team experiences together. Win or lose--hard work, commitment, character, and playing as a team will bring a team success. Everyone makes our team and we all work together to achieve this success. Teacher Peter teaches Middle School social studies and science here at Friends and is the parent of a Friends School alumnus.
