Nature’s Spring Gifts by T. Peter

Last week, sitting on my back porch absorbing the warm spring air (and taking a respite from the daily news), I noticed two birds fluttering near our kayaks.  Upon further investigation, I discovered that our lovely, curious, and resident Carolina Wrens were making a nest in one of the kayak compartments. Oh, those little buggers!  Sadly, I removed the nest, so as not to disrupt it later with eggs, chicks, and frustrated wren parents.  However, when I looked more closely at the nest, I saw a masterpiece of moss, dried grass, and a perfect bowl deep in the clump for warming and protecting the eggs.  Another one of nature’s gifts just outside our door!

This last week, spring has really sprung!  The ospreys just arrived from the Amazon.  The wood frogs, chorus frogs, and spring peepers were calling.  Trees blooming.  Flowers erupting.  My wife and I even discovered a Great-horned Owl sitting on an old osprey nest.  We visit her each day hoping to see the little owlets peeking over the stick nest.  We even caught (or rescued) and released a few wasps cruising around inside our house!  So spring has sprung and has really started to spring into action right outside our front and back doors. With all the gloom and concern about our planet, our friends and family, and our own health, the natural world continues on with its magic.  That “magic” is there for you and your family to enjoy. Have you been working on our Outdoor Learning Bingo Board? I’ll be thrilled to see and hear what you have discovered and created by being outside! Enjoy!
